How to add washer fluid

We all have probably experienced this, you are driving down a road soaked road when another vehicle passes you splashing dirty water and debris all you’re your windshield.   You reach over to push the washer button and nothing happens - not good.

While it is possible the pump the sprays fluid onto your windshield is broken, it is more likely you’ll need to add some washer fluid.   The easiest way to test whether it just fluid or something more, you will need to add washer fluid to the reservoir.  If the washer fluid reservoir retains washer fluid for more than a day or two,  it was the fluid.   If the reservoir is empty after a few days, you probably have a leak or if no fluid comes out when the pump is on, there is either a leak or the pump has stopped working.   Either way, you will need the advice of your dealer or mechanic.

Checking and adding windshield washer fluid is easy and takes less than 5 minutes.

Here is what you will need:
Windshield washer fluid or Windshield washer fluid with bug remover or Windshield washer fluid with De-icer.
Funnel

Here’s how to do it:

1.
Pop open the hood and locate the windshield washer reservoir (be careful not to get this confused with the radiator fluid reservoir).  The windshield washer reservoir is smaller and generally has water spout and windshield markings right on the top of the cap, and/or it will read, Washer Fluid Only.

2.
Snap off the cap and look inside.   If the fluid is low, (not filled to the top of the reservoir) use the funnel to fill the reservoir bottle  to the top with washer fluid.

3.
Replace the cap and you’re done.

A word of caution:  Don’t ever pour dishwashing liquid or any other kind of soap in the washer reservoir.  Doing so can damage the pump.
